I was given a Vizio VX32L that apparently just stopped working one day. It appears that the screen comes on, but no picture is displayed including the menu. Pressing the power button while the TV is on will not turn it off.
So far I bought a service manual online and have started poking around inside the case. A quick inspection did not show any obviously bad caps, lose connections, or damage. This is my first attempt at repairing a TV but I do have a M.S. in electrical engineer so I am not totally in the dark. Any ideas? |

Sounds like a main pcb and is not considered a servicable part. You can find a new one here: http://www.encompassparts.com/
Simply sign in as a guest and they will sell to you.

The problem very well might be the main board, but I am not too excited about buying a (probably refurbished) board from an unknown supplier that may or may have anything to do with my problem. These boards are pretty expensive compared to the current value of one of these TVs. Plus, just trying to buy replacement boards blindly won't teach me anything about how to diagnose or repair this TV. |

FYI. Encompass is not an unknown supplier. FYI Encompass is one of the largest suppliers in the US.
The main board consists of the System control circuits and employ's the point contact micros which unless you are quite well off you will not have the equipment nor the ability to replace or aquire the system control chip needed. The trouble shooting is to the board level only as I am not aware of any service manuals for this set that includes the schematics for component level repair. This has become the norm
You want a name for a known supplier: Try Sears Parts Direct here: http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action
The part number for the main board is Main pcb 3632-0162-0150 and costs $136.00.
The only troubleshooting you will be doing will be confirming I/O of the key board and making sure B+ is there and that the crystal is running.
If you want to go even a little deeper you can take an oscope and confirm digital activity, or lack of, on the LVDS cable which will tell you if there is information being sent to the T-con board which will tell you if the panel is operational or not.
Even if you find a manual for this set it is going to give you flow charts for I/O only to troubleshoot to the board level.
Full and complete service manuals are simply not available for Vizio as far as I know. That is unless you have a friend on the inside that is willing to supply.

Encompass may not be unknown to you, but its unknown to me.
I might consider buying a replacement board if I knew that was the problem. At this point I still don't know whats wrong. In addition, because I actually trying to learn something and figure out what is wrong, buying parts until it works won't help me much (and will cost more than what the TV is worth). I do own an oscilloscope so maybe I'll just use that. |
