Complete novice here, not only looking to save a buck, but to expand my understanding of all this lingo you guys throw around.

Got a hold of an Emerson EWC1902. Fuse is good and no bulged capacitors (this unit has a VCR built in, so I have not checked the part of the board under it). Plugging it in creates a whining noise that I cannot pinpoint, and unplugging it increases the pitch of the whine until it is out of my hearing range I suppose. There is no power indicator light. Nothing else takes place.

Would love to and is easy to throw some pictures of it up here. Yet nothing catches my eye at the moment. If someone is patient enough to suggest a few things, I'm all ears and ready to learn.

If you have a DVM, put it on "diode test" and start by checking the horizontal output transistor and the semiconductors in the power supply. Also check any fuses you encounter. Any suspicious readings "in-circuit," lift one lead and recheck.
