Failure: TV won't turn on with the exception of the standby light. Probable cause, bad outlet.

Hey,

I've had this TV for a year now, and have used it as a PC monitor. About a month ago, this TV started failing. At first, it would only turn off the screen for a little while and turn it back on, like a little flash.

Then it started taking longer for it to turn back on, it would no longer flash, but remain off for like 10 seconds, which started worrying me. Then, it started taking minutes until it eventually didn't turn on again.

Now, i have borrowed a replacement TV from a friend, which is the exact same model and it started exhibiting the same symptoms. I figured it was a bad outlet, so i bought an UPS and haven't had any problems since with this borrowed TV.

How can i fix my old TV by myself? I'd appreciate any assistance, and since i'm an engineering student, i'm willing to learn anything you guys can teach.
