I would like to know if a SCR is turned on by gate and is always in the on position would not a piece of wire do the same thing?

thats a good question. If it is always on, it would be close. I would say that a diode would be better because it would have the same .7V drop as the SCR.

I guess I wouldn't do it if I cared very much about device your connecting it to. You'd pretty much eliminate the entire reason for the scr.
