|
|
First post here, and Im hoping someone on this forum can help me out. Here's my issue.
I own a Sony KDS-50A2000. The other day I attempted to plug my computer into the HDMI port, which I have done many times before. As I tried to plug it in, a large spark / flash / flame shot out, which fried the port on the TV and the end of the HDMI cable. The TV was plugged in and turned on, the computer was not. Picture of the HDMI port in the link below:

I figured out the reason for the flash was because the hot and nuetral were reversed on this outlet, which I have since fixed. The flash did however do something to mess up the picture on my TV. I tried every input on the TV, and got the same bad picture. I then tried my Sony upconvert DVD player, and the picture was perfect. I then went into the DVD menu, and changed the output from Auto 1080p upconvert to 1080i, and the picture was messed up again. Below is a link to the picture of the 1080i signal:

And below is a link to the picture of the upconvert 1080p signal (the large white dot is just glare from the flash):

As you can see, for some reason the 1080i signal is bad, and the 1080p signal is good. Also, all the on screen display menus for the TV look good. Link to a picture of the on screen display menu below:

So there's my problem. I obviously fried something internal when the big spark happened, but I dont know if its a minor fix or something major where it would make more sense just to buy a new TV. I was hoping someone on this forum who has intimate knowledge of how these TV's work could offer up some information.
Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!! |

The board the burnt jack is on obviously kaput, but after that who knows. You would need (schematic, block diagrams, training manual, etc.) to see where the "good" signal flow goes that the defective signal does not, if that makes any sense.
Board ground foils could also be compromised, similar to a set being hit by lightning. |

this may sound stupid, but if it was mine... I would just find a way to supply it with a 1080p source and forget about it.
I am quite surprised about the hot/neutral reverse causing this. That TV should have a switch mode power supply in it... so it shouldn't have mattered. |

Not stupid at all, great suggestion actually, and that did occur to me, I was just hoping someone here could help me diagnos the problem so I could try and evaluate repair costs if I did choose to take it to a repair shop and get it fixed. Based on what I am hearing, it sounds like it would take someone who knew what they were doing quite some time to diagnos the problem, and even more time fixing it, which makes me see big $$$ in repair costs.
Concerning the hot/neutral reverse causing this, I guess I cannot 100% say that is what made this happen, all I know is that when I checked the outlet, they were reversed, and I read on other message boards that this can cause damage to sensitive electronics, like TV's and computers. So who knows, maybe that wasnt the cause and there is some deeper problem within the TV, which is an even bigger issue.
Thanks for the responses, any other input anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. |
