I also have a Toshiba CX32D60, my chassis is TAC 9442. I tried to get the Sams Photofacts schematic at my library but it wasn't available in the Sam's catalog.

Symptoms:
When first turned on the picture is normal but soon appears squished from both top and bottom. There are large black areas covering the top one-third and bottom one-third of the screen with the squished picture occupying the middle third of the screen. It looks like an extreme version of letterbox format. I figured I had a problem with the vertical circuit.

Sometimes the picture will revert back to normal, then go back to squished. A light thwack on the side of the TV will sometimes cause the picture to normalize. If the TV is left on and warmed up, approx. half hour, the picture will normalize and stay normal for hours.

I pulled the back cover off and did a visual inspection. I was trying to find the vertical section of the main board, whereupon I would look for burnt components, but saw no markings indicating the vertical section (I did see HORIZ).

I found a curious looking component, which I presumed was a damaged capacitor. It's a black cylindrical component that appear to be oozing a white material. The component is marked TLN 2115G 405. Photo here:

This is a portion of the right side of the board as seen from the back of the chassis.
(I left it as a large file so zooming in would be possible)

I tried to see this component in Sheri's photos, PICTO106.jpg, but it is obscured by the wiring harness. What little of it you can see, it does appear to have the white substance coming out the side of the component. What is this component and is it normal for white stuff to be oozing out of it?

Now that I know where to look I suppose I will go back inside and locate the parts C305 and IC301 and try the repairs detailed by kuhurdler.

Anything else I should be looking at?

That component is a coil, not a capacitor and the white stuff is glue to hold it onto the board. I do not think this is the component that is causing your failure.

I kind of suspected that since I also saw it in Sheri's picture and in the last picture here:

I'm going to try to repair it by resoldering the vertical circuit IC. I don't have the TV apart--do you happen to know the value of cap C305?

Took the back casing off the TV again to find the values of the caps in the vertical circuit, intending on buying them and replacing them. While in there I used the eraser end of a pencil and wiggled IC301, C305 and C342.

C305 and C342 are the only two caps in the vertical section that were reddish-brown in color.

C305 is 2.2 microfarad, 50v
C342 is 1.0 microfarad, 50v

Apparently wiggling the components reseated something as the TV has had a normal picture now for three days running. I suspect cold solder joints on the IC pins and I expect the problem to reappear at some point. [crosses fingers].

If the problem comes back I'll buy the two capacitors, work up the nerve to discharge the CRT and replace the caps. I'll also touch up the solder on the IC pins.
