Hi all, I'm new here. Excellent information in many of the posts I've read so far. I hope you can help me out with this problem:
My Zenith SR3547RK (built Aug 95 in Juarez, Mexico) made some clicking noises and quit. It will not power up now. When I disconnect it for a while and plug it back in, there is a small arc on the bottom of the PCB not far from the main power inlet circuit.
The arc happens under a black rectangular component that is about the size and shape of a postage stamp, only about 1/8th inch thick. This piece has a part number 212 168 94. There are four pins coming out of the bottom of it, and the snap (arc) comes from under the one labelled with a (+) sign.
Directly behind it is another component that looks like a capacitor, only it is roughly barrel-shaped, and the PCB is labelled LX3410 next to it. This component looks like it might be swollen, though I'm not sure.
So far, I have done nothing except check the fuses and verified that they are all good. I've also looked for any signs of burnt or overheated circuits, and I don't see anything unusual - just some slightly brown areas that I think are probably normal.
Any suggestions on where to go from here? I'm not an electronics expert, but I can operate a soldering iron, and I'd like to save this old thing if I can.
Many thanks in advance,
Rich |

Sounds like a bridge rectifier. Four diodes in one unit assembled to form a "bridge rectifier."

Sounds like a "choke." Usually don't swell.
It's also possible that the arcing you're describing could also be a bad solder joint on the bottom side of circuit board. |

The bad solder joint might have some merit. The pin comes through the board, and is surrounded by a ring of carbon, and there is no continuity to the circuit that I can see.
I thought about resoldering it, but assumed it would just blow the joint out if it was a bad component.
But I'll give it a try this week sometime and let you know how it turns out. Thanks. |

Unbelievably, it was simply a bad solder joint. A quick dab of new solder on the arced joint fixed it completely.
Thank you folks SO MUCH - especially JTS1957 for the solder suggestion.
